The Challenge
How do you invite a community to engage with difficult history—not through a lecture, but through conversation?
The Anderson Area Remembrance & Reconciliation Initiative has spent years researching Anderson County's history of racial terror lynchings through documentary films, historical research, public memorials, and community partnerships.
But remembrance alone wasn't the goal.
The challenge was creating an experience where people from different generations and backgrounds could sit together, share a meal, listen deeply, and discover how history can inspire reconciliation today.
Our Approach
Rather than organizing a traditional keynote presentation, we helped design an evening around one simple idea:
Break bread first.
Every element of the experience supported that vision.
Guests gathered around shared tables instead of rows of chairs.
Young people welcomed attendees and helped lead the evening.
Music created space for reflection before the conversation even began.
Instead of delivering a speech, Judge Pauline Hankins participated in a guided conversation that invited vulnerability, storytelling, and audience engagement.
The result wasn't simply an event. It became an experience.
Storytelling in Action
Judge Hankins shared the remarkable story of serving as a North Carolina District Court Judge on land where her ancestors were once enslaved.
Through carefully crafted questions, the conversation connected her family's history with broader themes of justice, healing, resilience, and hope.
Audience members weren't simply listening to a biography.
They were invited into a conversation about what reconciliation can look like within their own community.
Throughout the evening, nearly 100 community members participated—not just as attendees, but as neighbors gathered around the same table.

Our work didn't end when the evening concluded.

Why It Matters
At Rettew Creative, we believe the most meaningful stories don't end when the camera stops recording.
Sometimes storytelling looks like a documentary.
Sometimes it's a website.
Sometimes it's a room full of neighbors sharing a meal and listening to one another.
When story is intentionally woven into every part of an experience, something remarkable happens.
People don't just remember the event.
They become part of the story.
