Anderson County Museum | Freddie Stowers Experience

Bringing History to Life Through Immersive Storytelling

Museum + Immersive Storytelling

The Story

How do you introduce visitors to someone they have never met, yet leave them feeling as though they just spent time with him?

That question became the foundation for the Freddie Stowers Experience at the Anderson County Museum.

Freddie Stowers, an Anderson County native, became the first African American to receive the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism during World War I. Although his actions on the battlefield took place in 1918, official recognition of his sacrifice did not come until more than seven decades later.

The Anderson County Museum wanted visitors to experience more than a traditional historical exhibit. The goal was to create an encounter that transformed history from something people simply read into something they could genuinely experience.

Rettew Creative was invited to help bring that vision to life through an immersive, life-sized holographic presentation that would place Freddie Stowers at the center of his own story.

The Challenge

Transforming History Into Human Connection

Museums preserve artifacts.

Stories preserve people.

The challenge was creating an exhibit that honored Freddie Stowers with historical accuracy while engaging visitors of every generation.

Rather than relying solely on photographs, timelines, and written interpretation, the experience needed to create an emotional connection that helped visitors understand not only what Freddie accomplished, but who he was and why his story continues to matter today.

The Approach

Building an Experience Through Collaboration

Creating an immersive museum experience required more than producing a documentary film. It required bringing together historical research, creative storytelling, exhibit design, and emerging display technology into a single visitor experience.

Rettew Creative served as the creative lead for the project, developing the story, script, production, and overall visitor experience while partnering with Virtual On, an immersive technology company based in England, to integrate the life-sized holographic display into the exhibit.

Working closely with the Anderson County Museum, the project included documenting the exhibit space, developing technical drawings, coordinating installation requirements, and producing the final video presentation that would be integrated into the holographic system. Because the installation depended on an international production schedule following the COVID-19 pandemic, collaboration and coordination became just as important as the creative work itself.

The result was a seamless partnership that combined documentary storytelling with cutting-edge immersive technology to create a museum experience unlike anything previously exhibited at the Anderson County Museum.

The Final Experience

The Freddie Stowers Experience became the centerpiece of the museum exhibit.

Visitors are welcomed into an encounter that combines documentary storytelling with immersive technology, allowing Freddie's story to unfold in a way that feels personal, immediate, and memorable.

Rather than observing history from a distance, guests are invited to connect with one of Anderson County's most remarkable citizens through the power of story.

The Impact

When History Becomes Personal

The Freddie Stowers Experience demonstrates how museums can move beyond simply displaying history to creating meaningful connections with it.

By combining documentary storytelling with immersive technology, the exhibit offers visitors an opportunity to see, hear, and experience a story that might otherwise remain confined to history books.

The result is an exhibit that preserves not only Freddie Stowers' remarkable legacy, but also inspires new generations to understand the courage, sacrifice, and character that continue to shape Anderson County's history.
